Experience exhilarating walks high on the bright limestone of the Picos with the added bonus of being there to watch the mountains turn pink as the sun goes down followed by a morning of being on the spot to make the most of another day away from the pollution and noise of human civilisation.

Picos Rock and Snow offer hut to hut treks through the three massifs of the Picos de Europa. The routes between the mountain refuges consist of between 5 - 7 hours walking with breaks for snacks, drinks (it's important to carry lots of water), picnic lunches and photo opportunities. You should be fit and have a good head for heights as some of the tracks are quite narrow. Comfortable, well-fitting footwear is a must - this is not the time to wear in your smart new walking boots!Click to enlarge
(Mike carries a first-aid kit but prevention is better than cure in the case of blisters). Telescopic poles can be a help if you are used to walking with them and sunhats are advisable.

Huts in the Picos de Europa are quite basic but most are manned and provide meals, drinks and a welcome bed at the end of a day's high walking. Some even have showers. They tend to be great places for wildlife watching too. Late evening or early morning are the time to look for rebeco, the local chamois, as they venture near the refuges to search out left-overs. Choughs, Alpine and occasionally Common, and the specialist mountain sparrows, Alpine accentors, are almost always around the huts picking up crumbs. On warm nights there's always an option to bivouac nearby, making the experience even more memorable.

On clear days you can expect to enjoy views over the Bay of Biscay from these maritime mountains and if you're lucky, look down over a "mar de nubes", a sea of cloud hanging in the valleys. You simply choose how many nights you would like to spend out and we'll arrange the itinerary. These routes are available between June - October.
