The Green-winged orchid can be distinguished from the superficially similar Early purple orchid by the obvious dark veins on the lateral sepals (the "wings") which are usually green but occasionally purple. See examples below.

The spur is shorter than the flattish, slightly three-lobed labellum, usually pale in the centre with purple spots. Leaves are always unspotted.
