Situation

For a real Asturian experience Casa Usborne is hard to beat. The hillside village of Berodia lies in the heart of Cabrales, a region of Asturias famed for its blue cheese. Arriving from the coast to the north you pass through the village of Poo (pronounced poh!) de Cabrales and its priviledged views of Spain's most well-known mountain, Naranjo de Bulnes. The turning to Berodia takes you uphill from where you can appreciate Casa Usborne's enviable position in the village with its unobstructed views of the valley and surrounding mountains. The village has no amenities such as bars and restaurants (although you are spoilt for choice just 10 minute's drive back down to the valley) but boasts a cheese dairy (quesería), where María Eugenia makes artisan cheeses from cow, goat and sheeps' milk. Apple orchards surround the village providing the other famous Asturian product, its cider. Cangas de Onis, a large market town (farmers markets on Sundays) lies only twenty minute's drive away and the smaller town of Arenas de Cabrales just ten. A stay in Berodia is also ideal for accessing the popular lakes at Covadonga and the Picos' most famous walk, the Cares Gorge. Spain's Costa Verde is within easy reach for a day on the beach.
