Situation
Taking a right-turn in the village of La Hermida as you drive up the gorge from the coast, the road to Bejes twists up another gorge on the edge of the eastern massif. Crossing the river and scree slopes you arrive at the hay meadows below the village and, on your left, the twin village of Quintana. See map below. Along with Tresviso, Bejes is famous in Spain for making the potent Queso Picón, a strong cheese riddled with blue veins. The caves where it is matured are just above the village. There is a bar and restaurant near the apartment with a terrace for enjoying evening drinks and village life. Back down in La Hermida the spa hotel Balneario de La Hermida offers very reasonably priced treatments for non-residents. There's a shop in La Hermida for basic staples and larger supermarkets 20 min's drive in Potes.
There are plenty of walks to enjoy around Bejes. The hillsides here are particularly rich in flora in spring and early summer (orchids, pasque flowers, lilies.....) with accompanying butterflies while the mountains surrounding the village are, in my opinion, the best places in the area for the chance of glimpsing any of the few remaining wolves. Griffon vultures are pretty much a constant sight.
